Chapter One-Characterizing Workplace Communication
This chapter talks about the need for communication in the world. Good communication is actually considered to be a specialty. Good communication skills can be what makes or breaks a person in their career. It is to your advantage to have good communication skills in and out of the workplace.
To be good at communication is to be able to get your message across without confusion. In order to be good with communication you need to learn how to use visual aids properly. Good communicators will also changes his means of communication when they are in different situations.
Good communication also requires a good audience. The audience needs to be able perceive the message being sent to them. The person sending the message needs to adapt to how the audience is reacting to the message.
Technical communication doesn’t always mean that it has to be done by computers. It is a form of communication that can either be good or bad. Sometimes the technology can be fast and convenient. Some people may also struggle with the technology and that creates a barrier to communication. There are some flaws to the Internet communication and one being lack of privacy.
In conclusion this chapter talks about the importance of communication. It talks about the different forms of communication and how it can be affected if it does not go to plan. There are many needs for communication and this book and assignment are both considered communication.

I agree that communication is very important in that it can make or break you in a career. Without good communication the world would be chaotic. I believe that there would be mass confusion and little getting accomplished.
I think effective communication plays a critical role in almost everything we do on a daily basis. I know at my last job the lack of good communication was the underlying cause of numerous problems and stressors. There were communication related issues among the employees, such as myself, as well as between the managers. The atmosphere at work continued to go downhill until finally a meeting was called to discuss everyone’s issues. Afterwards, we definitely saw a change in the way we chose to communicate with one another which ultimately had a positive impact on the general attitude and overall morale of our workplace. So, with my experience, I definitely realize the importance of effective communication.
I believe you do see some confusion in the real world in part due to miscommunication or lack there of. I believe so because of my own experiences working part-time jobs, hearing it from family and friends, and seeing it in the news. To be effective good communication is essential. One reason communication may easily break down is because many of us today are very opinionated and stubborn in our ways creating differences.
Another reason certain information might not be communicated as reliably as it could be is because of a biased source. If the source does not give all of the information on hand of a particular subject then the audience may go on with a false belief or misinterpretation on a certain matter.
I also believe that communication is very important because without communication, we would not be able to send our thoughts and feelings to each other about various ideas. It would make us extremely primitive. It would be kind of funny if for a day, no one could communicate with each other. I would stay at home!!
I believe that communication is very important in a person's career but it is also important in almost everything a person does. Good communication between spouses and family is a key issue in relationships. In my job communication is very important also, I work with kids and there are times when staff do not communicate with each other and then we miss things such as giving medicine to the kids at certain times,and then we have to deal with unhappy parents. Communication is essential in our every day lives and how we present ourselves is very important.
Communication is essential in all areas of life to form good relations and make sure all parties understand what is trying to be communicated. The one thing I can foresee giving me problems in the work place is with my unfamiliarity with certain technology s that the business world uses and that could cause bad communications between others and myself, thats why I find this class to be good practice learning about new ways of communication.
What would this world be like if we didn't have the tools to communicate intelligently and educationally. Eventhough a computer is a form of communication, I believe that a computer is getting so popular for communicating these days that we as educated humans are losing the skills to communicate face to face. I think people have the attitude; "why pick up a phone, when I can just type and send." Humans are known to take the easy way out, and this is a perfect example of it. Communication is all around us, and if you don't have the skills, you won't go far in this world.
The chapter seems to be pretty straight forward about the importance of communication. There is no doubt that communication, whether that be verbal, non verbal, technical or any other kind of communication is very important. The fact that humans have so many various ways to communicate separates us humans, from the rest of the living creatures in the world. Therefore, a good chapter on general communication seemed to be a good start for the book regarding technical communication.
I never thought of technical communication as Rhetorical, but in figure 1.1 on page 6, it breaks down the rhetorical elements into content, contex, purpose, audience, visuals, document design, usability and language converntions. This table makes things much more clear. Also the different constraints listed were good to know as well. It points out the drawbacks and how to avoid them or the best way to gather information when constraints are present
Without good, effective communication, our world wouldn't be the place it is today. I am with the majority of responders here when I say that it is a necessity that people need to learn to communicate information in a useful manor.
I couldn't agree more with you more about how important communication is in your career. I am currently looking for a job and every job description has something about have good communication skills.
Communication is what seperates successful individuals from those that struggle. Having a good understanding of good communication practice will help propel you through your life and your career.
